Meeting market needs

To support Full Service Broadband networking, today’s operators are challenged to both expand and upgrade their networks to quickly meet new business opportunities. Mobile network operators in particular are facing a challenge to deliver broadband services in a profitable way.

At the same time operators are embarking on an evolution to packet networking.

It is also important for operators to reduce their opex by building their own backhaul networks, which will remove the reliance upon leased lines.

Optical networks provide a solution to these challenges, providing effective transport for mixed services, while meeting bandwidth needs for new data services, such as television over the network. Ericsson’s products are flexible enough to support these new demands as aggregation and grooming functions move closer to the edge of the network.

Offering description

Ericsson's broad optical offering is built upon innovative and flexible solutions in the following technologies:
  • Packet Optical Transport (POTP)
  • Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM)
  • Optical Transport Hierarchy/Network (OTN)
  • Automatically Switched Transport Network (ASTN)
  • Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH)
These are complemented by a common network management system. Ericsson's optical networks portfolio is a key enabler to the explosion of new broadband services, and the adaptation to Full Service Broadband applications.

Market Leader

Ericsson has an optical installed base of more than 400,000 units, in more than 100 countries, utilized by 350 operators. Ericsson (and formerly Marconi) has pioneered optical technology innovation, such as SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy), WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) and more recently OTN (Optical Transport Network) and ASTN (Automatic Switched Transport Network) control plane.

Ericsson now leads the way in packet-oriented optical transport and higher capacity, more agile optical networking.

Complete solution

Ericsson’s optical portfolio incorporates solutions for all key market segments.

Marconi OMS 800, Optical MultiService CLE/Access-Edge
This is a pizza-box STM-1 to STM-16 delivery of Ethernet and TDM (Time-Division Multiplexing) services. It is targeted at customer-located equipment and access-edge applications such as street side, campuses, or multi-tenanted buildings.

Marconi OMS 1200, Optical MultiService Metro-Edge
This is an ultra-compact STM-1/4/16 aggregation solution for the grooming and switching of Ethernet and TDM services in common equipment. It is suitable for use in metro-edge applications such as radio access, residential or business service aggregation.

Marconi OMS 1400, Packet Optical Transport
OMS 1400 is the latest generation of packet optical transport. Used in numerous metro-edge applications (such as mobile, residential and business premises), this high-density, modular 2U-high product offers a wide variety of Ethernet and TDM interfaces and up to 80Gbit/s Ethernet switching. It is ideal for the support of dual technology needs in the mobile backhaul world, along with strong packet capacity to support mobile broadband growth.

Marconi OMS 1600, Optical MultiService Metro
As a high-capacity STM-16/STM-64 MSPP family offering a flexible mix of high-density TDM and Ethernet ports, the OMS 1600 is ideally suited for applications ranging from metro-edge service aggregation – with dual TDM/Data bus – to ring-closure in the metro core.

Marconi OMS 2400, Packet Optical Transport
Based on a scalable packet-switched core, the OMS 2400 Packet Transport family covers a wide range of applications from CLE to the metro core. As well as packet aggregation and service grooming, flexibility is underlined by the inclusion of both native Ethernet and TDM/WDM network interfaces.

Marconi OMS 3200, Optical MultiService Core Switch
As a high-capacity (up to 960Gbit/s) family of multi-service optical core switch flexibility nodes, the OMS 3200 includes both higher and lower order VC (Virtual Circuit), ODU (Optical Channel Data Unit) and packet switching options, together with ASTN and OTN/WDM interfaces for maximum network and service flexibility.

Marconi MHL 3000, MultiHaul WDM
The MHL 3000 is a cost-optimized multi-reach WDM platform for data, TDM and wavelength services in metro, core and ultra-long haul applications from 2.5Gbit/s to 40Gbit/s per channel.

ServiceOn Optical
This is a common network management platform for the entire OMS portfolio.
