The Alcatel-Lucent 1696 Metrospan is a versatile metropolitan WDM platform supporting a broad range of data rates, easily customized for both non-amplified systems used for intra-city networks, or amplified systems for metro and regional networks. It is compact, scalable up to 32 channels, and can be installed in any environment, from a central office to a basement closet.

The Alcatel-Lucent 1696 Metrospan offers Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Multiplexer (ROADM) functionality as part of its portfolio. Service providers can remotely reconfigure the add and drop capacity at each node in the network. ROADM functionality reduces operating expenses by eliminating the time and complexity involved with manual wavelength reconfiguration. The 1696 Metrospan also supports Wavelength Tracker that leverages SDH/SONET familiarity to deliver integrated optical layer management for WDM networks. By providing clear visibility into individual wavelength activity, network operations costs are reduced and network builds, operations and maintenance are greatly simplified.

Depending on customer requirements Alcatel-Lucent can deliver both Dense WDM and/or Coarse WDM at the edge of the network. The compact version of the Alcatel-Lucent 1696 Metrospan - the Alcatel-Lucent 1696 Metrospan Compact - is a small, low-cost WDM platform for Customer Premises Equipment and edge applications that provides cost effective WDM networking functionality.
