Alcatel-Lucent 1660 SM STM-16/64 Optical Multi-Service Node for Metro Applications

The Alcatel-Lucent 1660 SM Optical Multi-Service Node (OMSN) comprises next-generation STM-16/64 SDH equipment that integrates packet-switching functionality into a capable SDH system. It can be configured as a pure add-drop multiplexer or as a small cross connect. It provides STM-1/4/16/64 ports and a 384x384/256x256 STM-1 equivalent HO/LO matrix.

Meeting both metropolitan and regional network requirements, the 1660 SM is an ideal multiservice transport building block for delivering SDH, integrated ATM and Packet Ring MPLS-based switching capabilities, as well as LAN interfaces (Ethernet, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet). Integrated Service Adapter (ISA) modules designed for ATM or Packet Ring switching and Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet transport through the optical network can be equipped as needed.  The 1660 SM supports Generalized MPLS (GMPLS) for enhanced resiliency and flexible service interworking with intelligent optical core networks, such as those based on the Alcatel-Lucent 1678 MCC

The main network applications of the Alcatel-Lucent 1660 SM are: SDH metro transport in both ring and meshed network architectures; Backhauling of 3G mobile and DSL broadband traffic; Metro Ethernet in MAN and WAN; SANs.

The Alcatel-Lucent 1660 SM offers an AU3/TU3 conversion feature to support SONET/SDH gateway capabilities (for cost-effective transportation and aggregation of non-concatenated SONET payloads) when OMSNs are deployed at the SONET/SDH boundaries.

It provides unmatched performance for its footprint.

The 1660 SM also allows for flexible and cost-effective Storage Area Network (SAN) and transparent data services, spanning SDH and WDM technologies.

Benefits:

  • Optimizes cost-effectiveness of transport networks: efficient for traditional voice and leased-line traffic as well as for increasing data traffic
  • Aggregation for broadband services such as triple play and Business Ethernet services
  • Provides 3G mobility backhaul
  • Reduces time to market for new revenue-generating broadband data services: "ISA" and "4xAny" plug-in-concept for easy service upgrade where and when needed
  • GMPLS efficiency for fast service provisioning and OPEX reductions; CAPEX savings with a more fully monetized transport network; and increased reliability
  • Smooth and cost-effective in-field network upgrades: from 2.5G to 10G, leveraging huge operators' 1660 SM existing assets at minimal CAPEX and OPEX
  • Guaranteed customer service reliability: protection methods
  • Unrestricted deployment of hardware items across systems, synergy in spares and spare management, easy repairs and reduced training requirements: through the common building block concept of the Optical Multi-Service Nodes (OMSN) product family
  • Reduced OPEX: simplified network operations and operators' staff training thanks to the Alcatel-Lucent unified network management system, which offers integrated end-to-end service management functions with the same look and feel for all Alcatel-Lucent's transmission products

Features:

  • State-of-the-art SDH functionality ranging from 2 Mb/s and Ethernet up to 10 Gb/s traffic interfaces
  • Data-aware enabled by Integrated Service Adapter (ISA) plug-in modules; performing rate-adaptive Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet transport, ATM cell switching or Packet Ring MPLS-based switching functions
  • GMPLS control plane with automated discovery and provisioning of network services, resiliency to multiple network failures and enhanced connectivity to intelligent optical core networks
  • Can be equipped with the 4xAny TDM concentrator which multiplexes up to four different high-speed client signals (Fiber Channel, ESCON, FICON, etc.) into an SDH standard protocol
  • Colored interfaces for direct interworking with DWDM equipment
  • Full SDH/SONET interworking
  • Network protection schemes: SNCP/I, SNCP/N, Linear MSP, MS-SPRing; Drop and Continue for SNCP and MS-SPRing
